Saturday & Birthday Drunks
Yeah, drUnks, not drInks.
Mom had a bit of a surprise party for Dave's birthday today. The surprise was not the party itself, he knew about that. The surprise was just how many people were invited!
Dave knew that I would be there, with the boys, and that Tammy, his daughter would be there with 2 of her daughters, and their dad, Brad. That's it.
He was rather surprised when all these cars and trucks kept coming up his driveway. Two of his brothers with their wives, a nephew, two nieces, plus several friends and their spouses and kids. Mom and Tammy and I did a big meal, brats, burgers, dogs, plus all sorts of side dishes. Plus there was more beer there than at the local liquor store. Lawn chairs in a huge circle around a fire ring, Tammy set up a stereo over by the garage for background music. Mom even got him a cake with a picture of a backhoe on it... that's what Dave does, he drives big machines. He was so surprised and very happy. The man turned 57 and nobody had ever done a big party like that for him before. He loved it, even though he kept telling Mom that he was going to kick her butt every time another car turned up the driveway.
Mom did the grilling and I was in charge of the buffet table, setting it up, and keeping it stocked. Wow, those drunk people can really pack away the food, let me tell you! It was a ton of work, the prep and the clean up afterwards, but very worth it, to see Dave and his reaction.
In the end, only one person spent the night, too. Dave's nephew was MIA for a bit, after everyone else had left. His truck was still there, but he was nowhere to be found. Then we found him... sleeping in his truck. Well, better that than a DUI, I guess. And it was a nice night. At least Dave's birthday isn't in December, it would have been a bit chilly to sleep in a vehicle then!
Dave's daughter, Tammy turned out to be the one casualty of the night though. There's always one, ya know? She fell down the stairs, and her ankle was so swollen and had a funny bend and bump to it, I really think she broke something. She was really drunk and would say "No, it's fine, I'm fine" then she'd try to walk, and end up crawling. Now, if you're that drunk and can STILL feel the pain, then sober, it's got to be excruciating. I hope she goes to the doctor.
It was a good night but I'm glad it's over!
